What Is Clindamycin Taken For Information in Q&A
Have you ever taken Clindamycin or know anything about it? I had one of my back tooth pulled yesterday. I have a bad infection and the dentist prescribed me clindamycin. I read the warning signs on the paper for the med and it said that it could cause colitis, I'm worried about this. How common is this problem? I have been taking the meds but I would like a new pre ion, but the dentist is closed for the holiday. Has anyone ever taken clindamycin? Or could you tell me more about it?

TweetyBird replied: "A possible adverse reaction to clinda is pseudomembraneous colitis. It's not a common reaction and I doubt that it will happen to you. If you should experience diarrhea, don't treat it yourself! Notify your physician and report that you're on clindamycin therapy."

Dr. Albert, DDS (UNITED STATES) replied: "This list is the things which may happen while on this antibiotic, but most people do not get these rare cases."

Amanda W replied: "I have taken clindamycin many times for infections, frequently prior to extractions. The most common side effect I have had with this particular antibiotic is that I tend to get yeast infections. You may want to eat yogurt while on clindamycin. It can help prevent yeast infections if you are prone to them. As far as the colitis is concerned, it is a rare side effect, however, if you do get diarrhea, get medical attention."

For anyone who has taken clindamycin or any other strong antibiotics? I was put on clindamycin yesterday for a possible infection from surgery i got a month ago. Ever since i took my first pill ive had this funky taste in my mouth. Has this happened to you when on antibiotics?

Jennifer L replied: "It's not uncommon with some kinds of antibiotics. As far as side-effects goes, it's a pretty mild annoyance."

Can i drink alcohol heavily on Sat if i just got done taken clindamycin on thurs? I was taken clindamycin 150 mg 4X daily for 7 days i take my last pill thurs n i want to go to the bar SAT n Drink alot!! is it okay or is there to much in my system still?!

crazy_clive replied: "yeah its fine. pills will be out of your system within 24hrs. thats y u need to take them once daily. should be gone by friday"

twilight 4 eva <3 replied: "i wouldnt take the chance untill like a week later"

How long does novo-clindamycin take to being taking effect? I have a cavity which turned into a painful infection. Because im allergic to penacilin, I was prescribed novo-clindamycin to be taken 4 times a day (every six hours) and I will be taking by 6th pill at 11pm tonight, but I have not noticed any decrease in the swelling or pain yet. How long does it normally take for the swelling to start going down? At what point do I need to call the dentist and let her know that the medication is not helping?

RDH replied: "Penicillin is the fastest acting antibiotic for dental infection. Since you are allergic, clindamycin was prescribed, which is slower-acting. It may take about 3 days before you get relief. It is important to finish the entire course of antibiotics. Many people stop taking them when they start to feel better. But that doesn't mean the infection has been knocked it. It can come back even worse! I hope you feel better soon; you should."

have you ever taken clindamycin while pregnant? if so what reactions have you had. I was ordered to take some for a vaginal bacteria. The medication is in vitro. I am only 10 weeks 5 days pregnant. you have to inserted into your vagina is not orally. My doctor prescribed it to me, but after reading side effects( cramping, premature labor, baby having a low weigh, apart from having a fatal colitis disease) and things like that i just want to know what people had experienced if you had.

descarte@sbcglobal.net replied: "No"

Doodlestuff replied: "What do you mean you are taking it in vitro? That makes no sense at all. If you question it, I would check with your pharmacist and ask if it is safe and if not, if something better could be suggested. Then call your doc and ask for a change."

Lucky replied: "No, but I took it when I wasn't pregnant and I freaking hated it. I got so sick afterwards, it wasn't even funny."

Dclp8204 replied: "if ur ob dr gave it to you then u should be fine ur dr will not give u anything to harm the baby the bacterial infection is probably worse for the baby then the medicine"

moongoddess209 replied: "I would call your doctor and ask if there is any other options...that you are uncomfortable with the risks of this medication. You can do searches on pubmed.com...just enter the name of the med and pregnancy and they will bring up some actual research so you can get a clearer picture of how often these things happen and how big the risk really is. You know that these little pamphlets tell you there is a risk but sometimes that is just because it happened to one person in the whole clinical trial. Get a better picture of what you are dealing with before taking it. Also consider the risk of not doing anything about the bacteria...I am sure that holds a whole other list of complications."

Mommy to be in 2008 replied: "Im 20 weeks pregnant & I use Clindamycin Phosphate 1% solution. Its a topical liquid that you put on your pimples. I have had really bad pregnancy acne so this has helped clear my face. I know that some enters the bloodstream, but not nearlly as much as if taken orally or in virto. Look at it like this, it couldnt be too harmful or your dr wouldnt have perscribed it for you. The topical is Pregnancy Risk Category B. Ive heard C & D are most dangerous. So call & ask what category it is. Good luck though:)"

deeann replied: "I took it yesterday for the same problem and haven't noticed anything yet. It is MUCH more dangerous to not take it! Having the bacteria down there can cause preterm labor and preterm rupture of membranes, and it can hurt the baby. You Should be fine."

i have been taken clindamycin for a tooth infection and alieve for pain twitch in right face, pain in abs,hip i have been feeling faint , shivering , right leg calf pain , dizzy , stomach pain and a cool sensation around heart

Amanda replied: "talk to your doctor!"

dnear34 replied: "Yuh think maybe yuh might wanna stop taken that stuff ): ,and go see your doc ,saranora dnear"

Josie826 replied: "I would immediately call the doctor that prescribed the clindamycin and ask if your symptoms are normal, which they aren't and see what he says. You may be reacting badly to the medication."

Dr_Speed replied: "Have you read the side effects especially for Clindamycin? Contact your M.D. or Emergency Department."

Amy P replied: "CALL YOUR DR IMMEDIATELY! If you can't get through- call the pharmacy. I would stop taking the medicine until you have talked to a professional! Better safe than sorry. Hope you feel better soon."

gofigure replied: "Some possible side effects are: Rare cases of severe, and sometimes fatal, diarrhea (called pseudomembranous colitis) have occurred with the use of antibiotics, including clindamycin. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience diarrhea during or within several weeks following treatment with clindamycin. If you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop taking clindamycin and seek emergency medical attention: an allergic reaction (swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; shortness of breath; closing of the throat; or hives); a rash; diarrhea; yellowing of the skin or eyes; abdominal pain; or little or no urine. Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to take clindamycin and talk to your doctor if you experience nausea, vomiting, or decreased appetite; heartburn; or an unpleasant or metallic taste in the mouth. Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome."

How long before diarrhea goes away after taking clindamycin? I was on the antibiotic Clindamycin for 1 week for a tooth infection...after 3 weeks of being off of the antibiotic I started having diarrhea...I have had this for 2 weeks now...been taking Immodium...just started Activia today...having cramps...watery stools...how long does this last?...If not gone away by next weekend am going to Dr....anyone else had this problem and what did you do or what did the Dr. prescribe for you to take to make it go away?...Thanks

David B replied: "Clindamycin is the worst antibiotic for causing Pseudomembraneous colitis. You should see your family provider for testing of your stool for C-diff and WBC's. If you have C-diff, another antibiotic, Metronidazole or Vancomycin will be needed to clear it up. Then you can use the probiotics, like yogurt. Good luck."

Dragosx418 replied: "My dentist prescribed me the same thing for my tooth infection. I took Clindamycin for about a week and a few days afterwards I started having diarrhea. It lasted for maybe 2 weeks or so and went away on its own. I ate yogurt with the live bacteria in an attempt to restore the "good" bacteria to my colon and I guess it worked."

Has anyone ever taken the antibitic Clindamycin? It's the oral kind. i have it for a tooth infection. what side effects did cause for you

CRAIG C replied: "No side effects, and it got rid of my infection like in three days."

orangeflowerchild replied: "its just a antibiotic. most dentists give if after surgery. you should be fine. just drink alot of water and eat good."

harrisfam21 replied: "eat lots of yogurt because that antibiotic tends to mess with your digestive system, i recommend that activia yogurt.. it's a little tart tasting but it should help you keep regular.."

Carrie L replied: "it can cause stomach upset and too much can cause yeast infections"

bmac replied: "Yes, maybe an upset stomach (don't take it on an empty stomach) and it can cause yeast infections. Because it kills all bacteria--even the good bacteria you have in your vagina. Eat yogurt as long as you are on the antibiotic. If you are supposed to take 2 pills a day for a week, then you eat 2 yogurts a day for a week."

della replied: "i was on that in oct. i really didnt have any side effects. i was fine with it."

Sharon Balroop replied: "Nothing"
