What is the difference between arthritis medicines Mobic and Celebrex? I take 200 mg Celebrex every day for arthritis. My RN friend says she takes Mobic 15 mg and it is the only arthritis medicine her hospital prescribes since it is safer and works better than Celebrex. I want to know why it is safer and what, if any, are the side effects?

ckm1956 replied: "Celebrex is called a COX-2 type drug. There's much less chance of stomach irritation than with other arthritis drugs. I doubt seriously that Mobic is the only arthritis medicine your friend's hospital uses. What if someone is allergic to it? What it comes down to is that your doctor knows you better than your friend. Ask him/her at your next visit to answer your questions."

quijibored replied: "Celebrex is classified as a COX 2 inhibitor used as a pain reliever. Mobic inhibits both COX 1 and COX 2. Both are used for arthritis. Simple explanation is that Mobic may be a bit stronger but more likely to cause stomach irritation. Less simple answer is whichever NSAID works best for you is your best choice. If the Celebrex is working ok, why change? If not, try another NSAID. There are many good choices available, assuming you don't have ulcers or heart problems which contraindicate using either type NSAID (non steroidal anti inflammatory drug). "

sgunes replied: "About celebrex: It is true that it is slightly better for the stomach (GI tract in general) and it does not have the detrimental side effects (increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality) that vioxx and bextra had. Mobic is a less specific COX-2 inhibitor and has never been shown to be any better than celebrex. As mobic is not generic it is as expensive as celebrex. If you are looking for a cheaper alternative to celebrex, I would recommend Etodolac as it is generic and overall better tolerated than ibuprofen or naprosyn. From a personal standpoint: my mother tolerated celebrex ok but had severe stomach problems with mobic. As always YMMV. Disclaimer: I am not a paid consultant for any of these companies and have no direct financial interest in them."

How can I switch back to Vicodin from Mobic? My doctor prescribed me Hydrocodone (Vicodin) for my back. I have been taking it for a few weeks. I called for a refill and he asked me to come in. Then he prescribed me Mobic. It doesn't work as well as Hydrocodone. What can or should I do to get back on Vicodin?

indigo replied: "You can talk to your doctor, but you might not get very far. Vicodin works wonderfully but is extremely habit forming. (It's from the heroin/morphine family of drugs, a schedule 3 controlled substance. These drugs block the pain receptors so that you literally don't feel pain. That's why they are so popular and easy to abuse.) It's not ment for long term usage - it's for accute pain, or for terminally ill patients. Mobic is an anti-inflammatory drug, it's much safer to take long term. It's ment to loosen up the muscles and joints and prevent inflammation. It's designed for everyday usage. Your doctor probably felt that you were past the need for an immediate pain killer - he/she should have discussed this with you, but if you're not in excruciating, horrible pain they did the responsible thing in not giving you more vicodin. Sorry to not be able to give you an answer you wanted to hear."

What pain medication can I take while taking Mobic (meloxicam) 15mg pills? Mobic is an NSAID, I am taking it for a lower back injury.

sokokl replied: "There are a few possibilities such as narcotic painkillers (just using this as an example) but I would recommend checking with your pharmacist as well as your doctor to see what they say."

Is it safe to take acetaminophen while taking Mobic? I take the Mobic for a bad knee, but acetaminophen helps me sleep better.

Jeffrey replied: "Absolutely NO! It is not safe taking NSAID's (Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) when taking acetaminophen. You need to choose one type or the other but not both or take the chance of killing your liver. GOOD LUCK!"

How long for Mobic to start working? Does anyone know how long it takes for Mobic to take effect and start relieving the pain? I was only put on it yesterday for some of the pain from my lupus and just wondering when I should expect relief. I forgot to ask my doc. Thanks

ckm1956 replied: "It should kick in in a day or so. If not, give it a week then call your doc."

I have been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and given lortab and mobic for the pain which is helping but.? Only when I take the meds. When they wear off the intense pain returns. I dont want to be on medication for the rest of my life. Any suggestions on how to do with the pain with out meds?

The Queen Has Spoken replied: "Sugar. You want to take the medication.... Inflammation is not your friend. Inflammation will cause arthritic material to build on your joints. The arthritic material will cause you more pain. And distort your joints. My aunt had RA beginning in her early twenties. By the time she was fifty she had had her knuckles replaced twice. Her wrists became so distorted that a ridge cut ligaments to her fingers. RA is debilitating left untreated.... Follow your RA specialist recommendations and protocol."

Billie77 replied: "you may have to take anti inflammatory medication for life. You have a very serious condition that requires serious medicine. I've enclosed a link to web site where you can read about natural treatments and you can experiment and try out some of these and see if they work for you. I recommend you take a hot bath with 2c. of dissolved Epsom salts every evening and afterwards massage an analgesic cream into the painful periods. This will help cut down on some of the pain."

nurseflowergirl replied: "you can try what are called comfort measures.try heating pads, thermacare pads on the painful parts.also creams like bengay work well.you can talk with your md about getting a tens unit.it works by sending electrical stimulation and blocking pain signals. mobic is not a narcotic so please take it as directed.sometimes the affect of these drugs take a while to build up. there are also a number of other anitiinflammatory drugs you can try.i take voltaren xr 100mgs twice a day.it took about 2 mos for pain relief, but i can walk! GOODLUCK:)MICHELE also join a health webgroup on rheumatoid, youll get more info and support there."

Reena S replied: "Shark cartilage helps in reducing pain.Grape seed extract reduces inflammation.More information on natural remedies for arthritis can be found at"

I have 15 mg pills of mobic and its my first time ever taken mobic so should I split the pill or just take it? I heard that the 15 mg pills might upset ur stomach, is this true?

slmw38 replied: "anything can upset your stomach. i take 7.5 twice a day and take mine with food"

FlyfreeIzzieUCSD replied: "take what the doctor told you to take and than take it with food to help prevent stomach upset.... any NSAID like Mobic or any other can upset your stomach... it often takes time to really cause problems but it helps a lot to take with food...."
